Bathroom Lighting

When you are looking to upgrade your home, there are two rooms you should focus on to ensure that you get a good return on your money: the kitchen and the bathrooms. When looking at remodeling a bathroom, there are a few elements that really command attention and those are the shower, bathtub and the lighting. Lighting in a bathroom can really make or break a room. The great thing is that depending on the age and style of your home, you might be able to get away with updating your home’s lighting in an effort to bring your home up to date.

Another great thing about lighting is that it can be relatively inexpensive. For instance, there are many brands of lighting that are moderately priced in the $10 to $50 range, depending on the type of lighting. On the other hand, if budget is not an issue, you can spend upward of $1000 fairly easily on lighting, especially if you purchase a custom piece of lighting.

When choosing lighting for your bathroom, you want to ensure that the finish of the fixtures is similar to the finish of your faucets as well as your shower and bath fixtures. For instance, you don’t want to have some fixtures that are bronze and others that are chrome or oil rubbed bronze. You want to have some cohesiveness when laying out a bathroom. This is particularly true if you plan on selling your home in the near future. In addition, you may want think about the color of the flooring as well as the mirrors. If you are going to be upgrading the bathroom lighting, it would make sense to go ahead and replace or upgrade the mirrors as well. Mirrors are easy and inexpensive to upgrade, but really seems to make an impact visually, especially for the money spent.

Atlanta Remodeling

Atlanta is a multi-faceted city with a diverse mixture of people with one of the largest metro areas of any city in the United States (currently the 9th largest metro area in the US). Atlanta is the largest city in the southeastern United States and is certainly the city with the most influence about fashion and style in the area.

What are some things to consider before remodeling a home in Atlanta?

Before remodeling, there are a few things you might want to consider.

  1. You need to set a budget.
    1. This is probably one of the most important steps in the process and certainly lays the foundation for what you should or should not consider. For instance, if you have $1000 to work with, you might want to consider remodeling a smaller room if you are going to be hiring someone else to do the work. It really all depends on what you want to do and whether you will be doing the work or if you will be hiring someone else to do the work.
    2.  A budget will also dictate whether you will be doing the work or whether you can hire others to do it.
  2. Are you doing the work or is someone else?
    1. Your budget will dictate whether you or whether you can afford to hire someone else to do the work. If you are doing the work yourselves, you will have more budget
  3. Extent of Remodel
    1. Remodeling means different things to different people. There are also different extents to which other people can or will do remodeling.
    2. Questions to think about:
      1. Are you remodeling the whole house?
        1. There are a lot of different terms that people use for remodeling. Remodeling can include taking out the sheet rock or paneling and taking the house down to the studs or it could just include putting in new fixtures or anywhere in between.
        2. How long are you going to live in the house after being remodeled?
          1. This is an important question because perhaps you should not remodel at all if you are only going to be living in the house for a short amount of time.
          2. If you are remodeling to sell, you must consider that you will most likely not see a return on your money. The only way you might see a return on your money is if the house is extremely outdated and most likely wouldn’t sell otherwise.
          3. What are other people in your neighborhood or street doing to remodel their homes? Have other people remodeled or is it better to stay in the older style?

Ok, you have a lot of things to think about. Remodeling a house can be great and very rewarding, but there are certain things you need to think about before spending thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.

Cheap Laminate Flooring

What is laminate flooring?

Laminate flooring is a composite material, meaning, it’s made of many different materials. The top layer is typically the protective layer and keeps the laminate from scratching. The next layer down is what people like about laminate, the looks. The next two layers are made of fiberboard or HDF and a melamine resin. These two layers give the laminate stability and structural integrity. The last layer typically comes in a second package and is known as the underlayment.
Laminate flooring is enjoyed by many for a variety of reasons. The easy installation is certainly one of the reasons. Laminate flooring doesn’t use glue or nails, but instead uses a locking system. Another reason people like laminate flooring as opposed to other flooring options is because of cost. Laminate flooring is very cost effective and because of its ease of installation, the installation costs are less than what you might see for engineered or hardwood flooring. Laminate flooring also gives you a wide variety of options that you typically don’t see in other flooring options.

If you are looking for an eco-friendly option, laminate is something you may want to consider. Unlike carpet that has to be changed out every few years, laminate flooring is extremely durable. Laminate flooring, in fact, is recyclable and uses natural resources such as wood chip fiberboard. Laminate can not only be good for the Earth, but also your pocket book and appealing to the eyes as well.
What to Look for in Laminate Flooring?
Well, for most people, the number one aspect that they will look for in a laminate floor is cost. The more real, the thicker and the more customized your laminate appears, the more expensive your laminate will be. If you want a dark, hand-scraped, 12 mm laminate, you will be looking at the $1.50 to $4.00 range. You can find laminate priced in the $1.50 to $2.00 range in the thickness mentioned, but it’s typically something you won’t find at Home Depot or Lowe’s even though they certainly deal in bulk.
Where Should Laminate Be Installed?

Laminate flooring can be installed in many areas. Depending on the water resistance of your particular laminate, you may want to install laminate in all the areas except the wet areas – kitchen and bathrooms. Some people also avoid putting laminate around doors that lead outside (people tracking in water). From the information available, you are probably OK with having laminate in areas around water as long as the water doesn’t sit on the laminate for long periods of time.
